Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Course

27/04/2018
Course Description
Performance-based Navigation (PBN) is the most practical solution for the regulation of new navigation systems technology. PBN is based on Area Navigation, or RNAV, a method of navigation which permits aircraft operation on any desired flight path within coverage of station-referenced navigation aids or within the limits of the capability of self-contained aids, or a combination of these.

This course is offered for pilots, holders of an Instrument Rating wishing to extend the privileges to PBN.

This course is EASA-approved in accordance with EU Commission Reg. no. 539/2016 and follows the training requirements contained in EASA AMC 20-16, EASA AMC 20-4, EASA AMC 20-27 and AMC 20-28.

PBN Training is offered to both holders of Single-Pilot and Multi-Pilot Instrument Ratings.

The aim of the course is to update the applicant on all elements associated to flying in PBN, such as:
  • Theory and definitions of Performance Based Navigation (PBN) for RNAV 1, 2, and 5, and RNP 1, 2, 4, and 10
  • Specifications, Requirements and Regulatory Guidance Documents
  • Navigation database and ARINC 424 specifications
  • RNAV and RNP equipment and sensor requirements
  • European Basic RNAV (B-RNAV) and Precision RNAV (P-RNAV) Operations
  • Operation of aircraft equipment and navigation suffixes
  • Flight planning for RNAV and RNP enroute, terminal, and approach operations
  • Continuous Descent Final Approach (CDFA)
  • Flying RNAV and RNP enroute and terminal procedures
  • Flying RNP approaches including LP, LPV, LNAV, LNAV/VNAV, and GLS
  • Operation with Aircraft Based Augmentation System (ABAS), Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS), and Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS)
  • RNP Authorization Required (RNP-AR) approaches
  • IFR Alternate Airport flight plan requirements
  • Contingency Procedures
  • Human Elements / CRM Elements as required

Course Format
Theoretical knowledge training is provided through an eLearning course containing reference documentation, interactive and audio-animated presentations and progress tests.

The eLearning Course is provided in English language only.
The practical element of the course is conducted on an appropriate FSTD (FNPTII or Type Specific FFS).

A Certificate of Completion is issued on satisfactory completion of the course and is valid for EASA and ICAO licences.

Entry requirements
PPL, CPL or ATPL license with valid instrument rating

Duration of the course
Theoretical knowledge training eLearning course has an approximate duration of 8 hours. The course is self paced and may be completed on any internet connected device such as PC, MAC, iPhone, iPad and most Smartphones.
Practical training includes a two hours FSTD session preceded by an instructor-led long briefing.
