Airlines hiring now: an overview of opportunities in Europe and Worldwide

An overview of airlines recruiting pilots, focusing on requirements and application procedures

Dreaming of a career in the clouds is the first step. Understanding how to turn that dream into a professional reality is the next, and perhaps the most important. At Aviomar, with over 43 years of experience in training excellent pilots, we know that top-tier training is only part of the equation. The other part is market knowledge: knowing who is recruiting, what they are looking for, and how to best prepare to seize these opportunities.

The aviation sector is experiencing a phase of extraordinary dynamism. Fleets are expanding, new routes are being inaugurated, and natural generational turnover requires a constant flow of new talent. This translates into a global demand for qualified pilots, creating a horizon full of possibilities for those possessing the right skills and solid preparation.

This article, based on an in-depth analysis of the current market, aims to be a clear and reliable guide for you, whether you are about to embark on this journey or are already a professional seeking new challenges. We will analyse hiring trends in Europe and globally, the fundamental requirements sought by airlines, and the most promising career paths, offering you a detailed map of your professional future.

1. Overview of Pilot Job Opportunities in Europe
The European market is a vibrant and competitive ecosystem, characterised by strong demand for pilots at all experience levels. From flag carriers to Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs), opportunities abound, especially for those graduating from a certified EASA training programme like the one offered by Aviomar.

A. The European Giants: Stability and Prestige The major European airline groups are constantly seeking new flight crew to fuel their operations.

  • Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Eurowings): The German giant and its subsidiaries are constantly recruiting flight personnel, offering direct entry positions, such as those for the new City Airlines on the A320 fleet.
  • Air France-KLM: The Franco-Dutch group is actively recruiting pilots, offering positions for First Officers—even without a Type Rating (Non-Type Rated)—for the fleets of its airlines such as Air France and Transavia.
  • IAG (British Airways, Iberia): Offers multiple entry channels, from First Officer positions to Captain roles, with a particular focus on the UK market, which requires a UK CAA licence.

B. The Recruitment Engine: Low-Cost Carriers and the Strategic Partnership with Ryanair If there is one segment driving recruitment in Europe, it is undoubtedly that of Low-Cost Carriers (LCCs). Carriers such as easyJet and Wizz Air are constantly recruiting First Officers and Captains, often offering accelerated career paths.

However, the undisputed protagonist is Ryanair. With the goal of transporting 300 million passengers by 2034, the airline is the largest recruiter of pilots in Europe. Its recruitment campaigns are continuous and target a wide range of profiles:

  • Cadet Pilots: The entry point for newly qualified pilots.
  • First Officers: Both with and without an aircraft Type Rating.
  • Captains: For pilots with consolidated experience.

It is here that Aviomar's training excellence links directly to career opportunities. Aviomar is the only strategic training partner for Ryanair in Italy, and our centres in Rome Urbe, Monterotondo, and Parma are the reference hubs for courses offered by the Ryanair Future Flyer Academy programme:

  • Ryanair Ab Initio Cadet Course (Integrated ATPL)
  • Ryanair Modular Course (Gateway 1)
  • Ryanair APS MCC Course (Gateway 2)

This is not just a title, but a concrete pathway: our "Ryanair Ab Initio" programme includes specific training modules designed to familiarise students with standard operating procedures (SOPs), CRM principles, and Ryanair's operational philosophy from the very first day of the course. Furthermore, our "Ryanair APS MCC GW2" programme is designed in close collaboration with the airline to prepare our students to meet the exact standards required to operate a complex aircraft fleet such as the Boeing 737.

C. The Keys to the European Market: NTR and fATPL Two acronyms are fundamental for anyone approaching the European job market today: NTR and fATPL.

  • NTR (Non-Type Rated): This means "without a Type Rating". Traditionally, pilots had to pay for the expensive rating for a specific aircraft (e.g., A320 or B737) at their own expense before they could apply. Today, given the high demand, many airlines—especially LCCs—offer NTR positions. This means the airline invests in you, providing the specific training for the aircraft you will fly. It is a huge opportunity that lowers entry barriers.
  • fATPL (Frozen Airline Transport Pilot Licence): This is the qualification held by a pilot who has passed all 14 ATPL theoretical exams and obtained a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with Instrument and Multi-Engine ratings (IR/ME), but has not yet reached the 1,500 flight hours required to "unfreeze" the licence into a full ATPL. The fATPL is the true key that opens the doors to most NTR First Officer positions in Europe. A quality pathway, such as Aviomar's integrated course, leads you to obtain the fATPL, making you an ideal candidate for these airlines.

The ideal launchpad for a career at Ryanair is our Ryanair Cadet "Ab Initio" course (Integrated ATPL), which includes the Boeing 737 Type Rating course sponsored by the airline upon completion, along with a conditional job offer.

D. Requirements and Application Process in Europe Although every airline has its specifics, the basic requirements and selection process are fairly standardised:

  1. Fundamental Requirements:
    • Licence: EASA fATPL or ATPL. A UK CAA licence is required for the United Kingdom.
    • Medical Certificate: Class 1, currently valid.
    • English Language: ICAO Level 4 or higher is mandatory.
    • Right to Work: Permission to live and work in the European Union or the United Kingdom.
  2. Typical Selection Process:
    • Online Application: Submission of CV and documents via the airline's portal.
    • Initial Assessment: Online psychometric, aptitude, and technical tests.
    • Assessment Centre: One or more days of group exercises and individual interviews.
    • Simulator Assessment: A practical test to evaluate flying skills and Crew Resource Management (CRM).

2. Overview of Pilot Job Opportunities Worldwide
Beyond European borders, the global market offers equally interesting scenarios, each with its own peculiarities. An EASA licence, recognised worldwide for its high standards, serves as a solid foundation for exploring these opportunities.

A. The Middle East: Global Hubs and Competitive Packages The Middle East is synonymous with exponential growth and large-scale recruitment.

  • Emirates (Dubai): With a plan to recruit over 5,500 pilots in the coming years and a fleet of wide-body aircraft (A380, B777, A350), it is one of the most coveted employers. It offers positions for experienced Captains (Direct Entry), accelerated command paths for First Officers, and roles for pilots with and without type ratings. Compensation packages are extremely competitive, featuring tax-free salaries, provided accommodation, and numerous benefits.
  • Qatar Airways (Doha): Similar to Emirates, it actively recruits for its mixed fleet of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, as well as for its business jet division. The selection process is known for its rigour.
  • Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi): The flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates regularly seeks pilots for its fleets, also offering very advantageous conditions.

For these airlines, flight hour requirements are generally high, but they offer visa sponsorship, attracting talent from all over the world.

B. Asia: A Vast and Diversified Market The Asia-Pacific region is the fastest-growing aviation market in the world.

  • Singapore Airlines: Famous for its incredibly high standards, it offers a complete career path, from the ab initio cadet programme up to Direct Entry Captain positions.
  • Cathay Pacific (Hong Kong): Another premium carrier recruiting First Officers and Second Officers, requiring an ICAO licence and a solid background.
  • LCCs and Regional Airlines: Carriers such as Cebu Pacific (Philippines), Vietjet (Vietnam), and Starlux Airlines (Taiwan) are expanding rapidly and represent excellent entry points into the Asian market.

In Asia, conversion of your licence to the local authority's licence is often required, but the opportunities—especially in the long term—are immense.

C. North America: Structured Career Paths The US market is unique, governed by the "1,500-hour rule", which requires airline pilots to hold a full ATP licence. This has created a well-defined system:

  • Flight Instruction / Smaller Operators: Pilots accumulate the necessary hours.
  • Regional Airlines: Represent the launchpad for gaining experience on turbine aircraft.
  • Major Airlines (The Majors): United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines primarily draw experienced pilots from the regionals.

These airlines have created "pathway" programmes and cadet academies (such as the AA Cadet Academy) to ensure a constant flow of pilots, offering a clear and predictable career path.
