The Sky is Calling
We at Aviomar, as children, also dreamed of flying. Becoming a pilot isn't just a job; it's a vocation that combines technical skill, responsibility, and passion. If you're between 16 and 30 and you feel the sky calling you, we're here to help you achieve your dream. We'll support you step by step on the path to earning your wings and embarking on one of the most exciting and rewarding careers in the world.
Step 1 - Do You Have What It Takes? Discover the Essential Requirements
Before even stepping onboard, there are some fundamental requirements to know. Don't worry, you don't need superpowers; just determination, preparation, and a good dose of passion:
- Age: You can start as early as 16 with the PPL course and obtain the commercial license from 18 onwards. The ideal time? Straight after your school leaving exams. Our advice? Start preparing while at high school; the sky won't wait!
- Education: A high school diploma is enough. You don't need a scientific background, but a good foundation in maths and physics will give you a head start.
- Medical Fitness: A crucial step. To become a pilot, you must pass a specific medical examination at an AeMC (EASA Aero Medical Centre). These are thorough checks on eyesight, hearing, heart, and general health; nothing impossible, but it must be approached seriously.
- English Language Proficiency: It's the language of aviation. You'll need a good level (at least ICAO 4) to communicate with air traffic control and international crews. At Aviomar, you can take the ELPE directly, the official ENAC/EASA test for professional and private pilots.
Step 2 - Your Path to Flying: All the Licences to Become a Pilot
Once you've verified the requirements, the real journey begins. Our goal is to guide you to the ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence), which qualifies you to fly as a captain or co-pilot on commercial airlines. There are two main routes to get there, and we're here to help you choose the one that suits you best:
- Modular Route:It's the most flexible route but will take a little longer. It allows you to obtain each licence and rating step by step, adapting the time to your schedule. Ideal if you need to work while studying. Typical stages are:
- PPL (Private Pilot Licence): It's your first real contact with the world of flying. It allows you to fly light single-engine aircraft for private use, carrying passengers. A mix of theory (navigation, meteorology, aerodynamics…) and practical flight that forms the foundation of your pilot career.
- Hour Building: The time when you build experience. You accumulate flight hours to access the subsequent modules, improving safety and control mastery.
- ATPL Theory: It's the theoretical core of your journey. An intensive course (650-750 hours) where you'll delve into everything needed to operate at an airline level. Passing the ATPL theoretical exams (managed by ENAC - National Civil Aviation Authority) is a fundamental milestone.
- CPL (Commercial Pilot Licence): With this licence, you can fly professionally. It's the step that turns passion into work.
- Instrument Rating (IR): It qualifies you to fly relying exclusively on instruments, even in difficult weather conditions.
- Multi-Engine Piston (MEP): It allows you to fly aircraft with multiple engines, an essential requirement for professional flying.
- MCC (Multi-Crew Cooperation): Here you learn to work in a crew, as happens every day in a real cockpit. It's the course that prepares you for the world of airlines.
- Integrated Route: If you want to immerse yourself full-time in the world of flying, this is the route for you. In approximately 24 months, from PPL to Frozen ATPL, you tackle theory and practice in a continuous and structured manner. We at Aviomar have designed integrated programmes tailored to prepare you best, also with airline selections in mind.
What is a "Frozen ATPL"?
Once you've passed all the theoretical exams and obtained the necessary licences, but before reaching 1500 total flight hours, you obtain a "Frozen ATPL". With this, you can already work as a co-pilot. Upon reaching the required experience, your licence "unfreezes" and becomes a complete ATPL: ready for command.
Step 3 - After the Licence: Get Ready to Take Off in the World of Work
Congratulations, you've earned your Frozen ATPL! Now begins the most exciting phase: turning your training into a real pilot career:
- Type Rating: Each airline operates with specific aircraft models (like Airbus A320 or Boeing 737). To be hired, you'll need to obtain a specific rating for that aircraft type, called a "Type Rating". Often, the airline itself takes charge of this training (sometimes with contractual obligations) after selecting you.
- Job Search: It's time to get involved. Prepare to take aptitude tests, technical interviews, and simulator assessments. The market is dynamic, but future prospects indicate a growing demand for qualified pilots.
- Career Opportunities: The airline (passenger or cargo) is the goal for many, but it's not the only path. You can also fly in these areas:
- General and Corporate Aviation (private flights, air taxis)
- Aerial Work (photography, surveillance, surveys)
- Flight Instructor (accumulate hours and pass on your passion!)
